PREACHING OF PROPHETS

Sent by: Br. Abul Hasan Naqshbandi

Part– I

One of the earlier scholars states that when the Prophets invited their nations towards Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) they focused on the purity of hearts. They called people towards what they themselves firmly believed. They spoke from the core of their heart. They had sympathy and kindness for their nations in the depth of their hearts. He writes: Every speech comes out with a cover from the heart of the speaker. If Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) allows a speaker to express himself, people will understand his words and comprehend his gestures.

This stage on the journey to Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) relates to the believer's speech in which he tells people about Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa). Every believer has a responsibility to call people to their Creator, to remind them of their Lord, and to participate in reform.

“I desire no more than reform in so far as it lies within my power.” (Hood 11:88)

“(Say O Prophet!) ‘This is my way. I call (people) to Allah with full perception, both I and my followers’.” (Yousuf 12:108)

This was the mission of every prophet of Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) and every follower of the right path.

There are different kinds of speech. There is a certain type of speech which has a considerable influence on people. This speech, as explained, is not the fluent speech that comes out from an intelligent mind or an eloquent tongue, but it is the speech that comes out from an enlightened heart.

Now recall many speeches given by Prophets, reformers, and righteous leaders; a few sentences that changed the course of history. Their speeches came out of pure hearts. Some of these speeches deserved to be recorded by Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Ta'aalaa) in His Glorious Book, the Quraan. The following are a few examples: Speech delivered by Prophet Ibrahim

“He said: ‘Have you then ever considered what you have been worshipping, you and your ancient fathers, they all are an enemy to me, except the Lord of the worlds, who created me, and who guides me, and Who feeds me and gives me drink, and when I become sick, He heals me, and who will make me die, then will give me life, and who, I hope, will forgive my fault on the Day of Retribution. O my Lord! Give me wisdom, and make me join the righteous, and destine for me a truthful description among the next generations, and make me among those who will inherit the Garden of Bliss, and forgive my father. Indeed he was one of those who went astray, and do not put me to disgrace on the Day when all will be raised to life, the Day when neither wealth will be of any use (to any one) nor sons, except to him who will come to Allah with a sound heart” (Ash-Shu`araa 26: 75-89)

Speech of Prophet Nooh

“Recite to them the story of (the Prophet) Nooh (Noah), when he said to his people: ‘O my people! If it is hard on you that I stay (with you) and give (you) advice through the signs of Allah, then, in Allah I place my trust. So, be firm in your plan (against me) with (the help of) all your partners, and your plan should not be a cause of concern for you; then carry it out against me and give me no respite. Still, if you turn away, then, I did not demand any reward from you. My reward is with none except Allah, and I have been commanded to be among those who submit’.” (Younus 10:71-72)

Dialogue between Prophet
Moosaa and Pharaoh and his people

“Pharaoh said: ‘What is the Lord of the worlds?’ He (Moosaa) said: ‘Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever there is between them, if you are to believe’. He (the Pharaoh) said to those around him: ‘Are you not hearing?’ He (Moosaa) said: ‘Your Lord and the Lord of your early forefathers. He (Pharaoh) said: ‘Your messenger who is sent to you is a mad man indeed. He (Moosaa) said: ‘Lord of the East and the West and whatever lies between them, if you are to understand.’ He (Pharaoh) said: ‘If you adopt a God other than me, I will certainly put you to prison.’ He (Moosaa) said: ‘Will you (do this) even if I bring to you something evident?’ ” (Ash-Shu`araa: 26:23-30)

Speech of Prophet `Eesaa:

“Spoke he (the baby): ‘Verily I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Book, and made me a prophet, and He has made me a blessed one wherever I be, and has enjoined Salaah and Zakaah upon me as long as I am alive, and (He has made me) good to my mother, and he did not make me oppressive (or) ill-fated. And peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised alive again.’ ” (Maryam 19:30-33)
